We have been in Pennsylvania for one week now. We are finally settled and I finally have time to pick up a book. I had a whole line up of books ready to go starting with George Orwell's Coming Up for Air. I set these books aside when I realized I needed a read that felt like home and could give some comfort. Now that things are slowing down, I have been dwelling on how much I miss family and friends. So I need a book that is all about family and friends and love and comfort. I couldn't think of a better book than Jacques Pepin's The Apprentice. Pepin's love for food, family and friends permeates this book and a reread is exactly what I need. The other thing that is making this move a little easier is how beautful Pennsylvania is. The humidity takes some getting used to but the town we are living in is so green and the houses are charming and the people are friendly. We have been enchanted by the most simple things...lightening bugs at dusk, sharing roads with horses and buggies, even the groundhogs who are kicking up a lot of dirt but are too cute to be mad at for long. I guess we are both working on feeling at home.

I have The Apprentice on my mp3 player. I don't know why I haven't listened to it yet. And where in PA are you now? (for some reason I missed this) I'm in Centre County.
Beth - I would be curious to see what you think of The Apprentice. Not only is he a talented chef but he is a really good writer and he paints too...Jacques-of-all-trades:)
We are in Lancester County in a town called Lititz. I am not sure where Centre County is but at this point I only know how get to the grocery store and back home again. Thank goodness for GPS:)
Your new community sounds wonderful! Just the sort of place for your girls to have a lovely summer and make some new friends. Welcome back!
Darlene - Thank you. It is good to be back and I can't wait to catch up with my book blog reading.
Sounds like you've found a perfect comfort read. I know it's hard to move away from family/friends, but new friends will soon fill the gaps (can't replace the family though). My brother is outside of Philly and we try to get down that way once a year. There are more fireflies there than anywhere I've seen!
I wonder how we could throw you a virtual house warming...
JoAnn - We hope to visit Philadelphia soon. There are so many exciting places to see within close proximity. First up I am going to take my girls to Hershey as a thank you for all their help and patience with the move. The fireflies are so magical. My youngest spotted them first and then we got lost driving home because we were memorized by them. You dropping by my blog after my long absence is the perfect house warming gift:)
OMG! You're in Lititz, home of the Wilbur buds! And Aaron's bookstore.
You're not very far from Bookingmama. Centre Co. is the "real" central PA -- where Penn State is, so I'm about 2 hours from you.
Lancaster Co. is a beautiful area of the state. I've lived in PA since the late 1970s.
Beth F - I have a lot to learn...I didn't know what Wilbur's Buds were until I looked them up. I have passed Aaron's and will definitely stop in soon. Bookish Ruth is in PA too. Lots of reading and blogging going on in the Keystone state:) Can you give me any tips on what to expect during the winter...is there lots of snow?
