Last summer, my sister and I bought Martha Stewart's Cupcakes with the intent to cook our way through the book. Really it was this recipe for Boston Cream Pie cupcakes that sold me but, eight reasons why later, have only just made them. Out of the nine recipes we have tried, only one... only one... has been a to-die-for- we-must-make-those-again-right-away recipe.

They sound yummy and they look yummy but they are only kind of yummy. And the thing about these recipes is they are pretty time consuming. Don't get me wrong...I don't have a problem putting a lot of time into my cooking but the result has to be worth that time, and the expense, and the dirty dishes, and the other cleaning up.

They aren't horrible and, with company coming over, they will be eaten up but I am about ready to copy out the one winning recipe for red velvet cupcakes and give up on this cookbook.
On a positive note...after buying a humongous bag of potatoes from Costco, my husband brought home a 5 pound bag of Yukons given to him by a vendor, and needless to say, we have been eating a lot of potatoes...potato soup, potatoes with kielbasa and sauerkraut, chicken and veggies with
Nan's herb potatoes. These potatoes were yummy and my family thanks her for supplying me a recipe for oven-roasted potatoes instead of creating my own:)
Happy Valentine's Day...may it be filled with lots of lovely reading!

Happy Valentine's Day to you! Those cupcakes look absolutely scrummy but I totally agree that it has to be worth the effort you put in.
I love potatoes! I've never tried that variety before (being on the other side of the world) but they sound wonderful.
I hate it when recipes disappoint - they certainly look good so it is a shame they didn't live up to expectations.
I think Boston Creme Pie is overrated. It looks good, it sounds good, but it just tastes so-so. Are you usually a fan of it and it was just this recipe that wasn't so good?
Oh my goodness, Stacy, they look delicious! Have one, perhaps two, for me!
Happy Valentine's Day!
They LOOK yummy. I think that is the most frustrating thing about cookbooks, in general, cooking your way through an enormous number of recipes to find ONE keeper. Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours!
Rochester Reader - Thank you. I am with you on potatoes...I have a list of foods I could eat every day and never get tired of it and potatoes are on that list:)
verity - Sometimes I wish there was some kind of guarantee on recipes...like if it's no good you can get your money back for the ingredients:) As it is, it's all trial and error.
Thomas - That is a good point. I have never had BCP itself, only the same components in other desserts and Ben&Jerry's Boston Creme Pie ice creams. I will have to try an actual BCP recipe but not from Martha:)
Darlene - I only had one as taste tester but I will other goodies in your honor on this day:)
Susan - Yes, this is so true about cookbooks. I have learned to rely on recipes from my mom that I loved as a child and try a new dish about once a week which either makes it onto our keep list or the never make this again list:)
The cupcakes look sooo good - sorry to hear they weren't worth all the effort. Thomas brings up a good point though, and personally I think the chocolate icing is the best past of BCP.
I agree with you that work involved and taste must balance out. How about a post on the red velvet cupcakes?
JoAnn - I am going to have to try me a real BCP. I love chocolate ganache, I love pastry cream and I love cake...so I can only guess it was the Martha and the previous bad experiences seem to bear that out. But in all fairness, I will have to see if I even like BCP...what a great excuse to eat some more cake:)
