...just don't get on. This was my third go and, once again, I cannot get into the club's adventures. The Pickwick Papers remind me of a lot of Sketches with Boz which, although I enjoyed the few sketches I read, I just didn't like them enough to continue. This seems to be the case with the papers as well. I am not completely giving up, the book will be waiting on the shelf for another time, but I am moving on to Dickens' Hard Times.

Hi Stacy. I'm sorry you didn't get on with PP.
I've read the first two chapters and have started to get comfortable with it. I thought the initial paragraphs were a bit too verbose and confusing (although I think that was the point) but it started to get to some action after that.
If you can get hold of the TV series with Nigel Stock, I can highly recommend it. It is superb... immediately funny and quite serious towards the end with an emphasis on debtors' prisons, etc. but with a happy ending.
I think it makes my reading easier as I have watched the series 3 times! and I have those characters in my head. Hard to tell how far that influences my reading.
I look forward to your Hard Times review and hope to read along with you on another Dickens of your choice some time. I have Bleak House and A Tale of Two Cities on my shelves and I am inclined to read the latter soon - it's also much thinner! Let me know...
Thank you, Stacy. This book tempts me so often but I have yet to plunk down my hard-earned cash for it. I trust your taste in reading material so I'll stop the craving here and now.
Really looking forward to hear how you get on with Hard Times!
So sorry you didn't get along with the Pickwickians - I laughed my way through that book. I'm scheduled to start Hard Times with my dd in two weeks (we have to finish Jane Eyre first), so I'll be looking forward to your comments on it, since I've never read it.
Rochester Reader - Yes, this may be one where watching an adaptation will be helpful to reading the book. For now it is set aside but I am making a note of your recommendation. I have both BH and To2C on my list for reading this year, so I will keep you updated on where I am or you can let me know when you would be reading one and we can coordinate from there:)
Darlene - Don't give up on it because of me (refer to Susan's comment below:) The thing is it reminds me a lot of Wodehouse (or the other way around) with all the fun and antics, so I hope at some point it will work for me.
Susan - Your comment makes me hopeful. I just think I may have to be in a different place in my life and we will click:) Please do leave me comments during your read with your daughter.
